Descriptive summary of course unit
The curricular unit intends to present the statistical methodologies used in social sciences, in order to provide knowledge that allows the interpretation of research results, using data analysis programs.
Objectives and expected learning outcomes
1. Present the foundations of scientific research
2. Identify the different types of research methodologies
3. Identify and define the problem, hypothesis and sample in scientific research
4. Analyze various techniques for data collection and processing
5. Identify ways of using statistical methods and data processing in the social sciences
6. To know techniques and forms of presentation of research results

The proposed program allows students to gain knowledge and develop the competencies foreseen in the objectives, as follows:
- theme 1 meets objectives 1 and 2, as it presents knowledge in the field of scientific research methodologies
- themes 2, 3 and 4 aim to achieve objective 3, in the definition of problem, hypothesis and sample in scientific research
- Topic 5 responds to Objective 4, which aims to provide the necessary knowledge for the analysis of data collection and processing techniques.
- topic 6 and 7 respond to objective 5, of knowledge and application of statistical methods.
- theme 8 responds to objectives 5 and 6, aiming at the analysis and processing of data in scientific research.

Lectures of expository nature and application of knowledge through presentation and work projects, as well as resolution of exercises. Technical / practical and field sessions will also be promoted.

Under the terms of the course's Regulation:
1. The actual presence of students in classes will registered, and if the number of absences for student exceed 30% of the total number of contact sessions scheduled for each course will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation of the regular season.
2. In written tests and evaluation elements referred is required to obtain a minimum score of 7.5 (seven point five) values.
3. If the student lacks or get a grade below 7.5 points in the tests or on the elements of assessment referred above, will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation of the regular season.
4. If the student lacks or get a grade below 7.5 points in the second written test (conducted on the same date of the written test end of the regular season) may be required registration for evaluation at the appeal time.
5. All written academic papers for assessment (reports, case studies, etc.) may be submited in the Turnitin database, available on the ISAG E-Learning platform, with a similarity rate of up to 30% acceptable.

The practical or theoretical-practical work (s) referred may also be considered, with a weighting corresponding to half of that considered in the context of continuous assessment, provided that the student communicates such intention to the teacher through the completion of a specific form to be made available by the teacher at the individual written test day.
The methodologies considered take into account the characteristics of the curricular unit. Despite a necessary theoretical nature, the use of exercises and fieldwork aim to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the curricular unit, from an applied or practical point of view.
