Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

DESCRIPTIVE SUMMARY OF CURRICULAR UNIT:
The Accounting and Audit course aims to provide students with relevant accounting and auditing skills, particularly for the purpose of interpreting the data of the Financial Statements and, at the same time, learning the procedures and working methods of an audit of the Financial Statements.

OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
This curricular unit, through the exhibition of theoretical concepts, conjugated, whenever possible and relevant, with examples and practical exercises, aims to achieve the following objectives:
1 - To know the relevance of the information provided by the accounting system established in the companies;
2 - Recognize the importance of the role of the auditor, both for the company itself and for the users of the information contained in the financial statements;
3 - Identify the audit work to be performed on the different classes of accounts, what is the objective of this work and its reflection in the audit reports;
4 - Obtain and interpret ratios from the financial report.

COMPETENCES TO BE DEVELOPED:
The student at the end should be able to:
1 - Understanding Accounting as an information system and its usefulness for economic decision making;
2- Analyze the Financial Statements of a company;
3 - Understand the fundamental concepts and procedures of the interaction between accounting and auditing;
4 - Analyze the importance of accounting and auditing procedures as a credibility factor of the Financial Statements;
5 - Recognize the instruments of analysis and economic-financial analysis based on the report and accounts of a company.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

The first objective "1 - To know the relevance of the information provided by the accounting system established in companies" is addressed in chapters 1 - Accounting and the company, 2 - Accounting Standardization System, 5. NCRF 1 - Structure and content of the financial statements , 6. NCRF 2 - Statement of Cash Flows and 7. NCRF 4 - Accounting policies, changes in accounting estimates and errors, although this objective is transversal to the remaining chapters of the program, since accounting is the main source of information for the auditing and economic-financial analysis of the company.
The second objective "2 - Recognizing the importance of the role of the auditor, both for the company itself and for the users of the information contained in the financial statements" is mainly addressed in Chapter 3. Financial Audit, in which the scope of the audit work and its procedures.
The third objective "3 - Identifying the audit work to be carried out on the different classes of accounts, what is the purpose of this work and its reflection in the audit reports" is discussed in more detail in chapter 4. Study of accounts and their audit , which addresses the auditing procedures that allow the work to be done in order to express an opinion.
Finally, the 4th objective "4 - Obtain and interpret ratios from the financial report." is discussed in chapter 8. Analysis of the economic-financial situation of the company through financial reporting.

Learning Methods

- Study of fundamental theoretical concepts needed to understand the lectured topics followed by practical exercises which aim at obtaining, simultaneously, two objectives: application of the theoretical concepts and the understanding of their practical usage in accounting and auditing;
- Case studies discussion, taking into account the underlying theoretical topics;
- Exercise follow-ups, all suggested exercises individual or group will be discussed.

Group work
- The group work consists of two parts:
I - definition or analysis of the internal control system (of a given area) of a company to be chosen by the group;
II - presentation of the financial statements of the same company and a brief analysis of its economic and financial situation;
- The work must be delivered in the form of a written report.
- The oral presentation of the work is global, after the delivery of part II.

Final Exam

Individual written test, weighting 100%.

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

In order to achieve the objectives described above, the classes include the presentation of theoretical contents where the Microsoft PowerPoint program is used. In the application of the contents taught, students are offered practical cases and exercises and in "PDF" format.
