Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

Descriptive summary of course unit
The curricular unit intends to present the statistical methodologies used in social sciences, in order to provide knowledge that allows the interpretation of research results, using data analysis programs.

Objectives and expected learning outcomes
1. Present the foundations of scientific research

2. Identify the different types of research methodologies

3. Identify and define the problem, hypothesis and sample in scientific research

4. Analyze various techniques for data collection and processing

5. Identify ways of using statistical methods and data processing in the social sciences

6. To know techniques and forms of presentation of research results

Skills to be developed
It is intended that students develop the following competences:

1. Acquire theoretical knowledge that allows the mastery of fundamental concepts and themes

2. To master the main notions of methodology of scientific research in this area of study.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

The proposed program allows students to gain knowledge and develop the competencies foreseen in the objectives, as follows:
- theme 1 meets objectives 1 and 2, as it presents knowledge in the field of scientific research methodologies
- themes 2, 3 and 4 aim to achieve objective 3, in the definition of problem, hypothesis and sample in scientific research
- Topic 5 responds to Objective 4, which aims to provide the necessary knowledge for the analysis of data collection and processing techniques.
- topic 6 and 7 respond to objective 5, of knowledge and application of statistical methods.
- theme 8 responds to objectives 5 and 6, aiming at the analysis and processing of data in scientific research.

Learning Methods

Lectures of expository nature and application of knowledge through presentation and work projects, as well as resolution of exercises. Technical / practical and field sessions will also be promoted.

Under the terms of the Bachelor's Regulation:

1. The students' attendance in classes will be recorded and, if the number of absences per student exceeds 30% of the total number of lessons scheduled for each course unit, the student will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation (regular season).

2. In the written tests and other assessment elements mentioned in paragraph 2 of Art. 39 it is necessary to obtain a minimum grade of 7.5 (seven point five) points.

3. If the student misses a test or receives a grade lower than 7.5 points in the tests or in another assessment element mentioned in the previous number, the student will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation (regular season).

4. If the student misses or obtains less than 7.5 in the second written test, held in the same date of the final exam in the regular season, they may apply for further evaluation in the Appeal season.

Under Degree Regulation:
The practical or theoretical-practical work (s) referred in b) in the number 2 of the 39. article may also be considered, with a weighting corresponding to half of that considered in the context of continuous assessment, provided that the student communicates such intention to the teacher through the completion of a specific form to be made available by the teacher at the individual written test day.

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

The methodologies considered take into account the characteristics of the curricular unit. Despite a necessary theoretical nature, the use of exercises and fieldwork aim to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the curricular unit, from an applied or practical point of view.
