SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF THE CURRICULAR UNIT
The curricular program of "History of Cities and Urbanism" aims to provide the students with basic tools for understanding the historical process and heritage (s) associated with the emergence and development of different types of cities. Aiming at these objectives, the program begins with a brief approach to the concepts, definitions and characterization of City, Historic Center and Urbanism. The program then addresses the different types of cities produced over time on a planetary scale, but emphasizing in a more prominent way the one that is classified and preserved in the current Portuguese territory. Cities as a tourist object will also be one of the topics under analysis. In addition to the examples presented and analyzed by the teacher, students will also present "case studies" resulting from their practical work.
OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Understand the Cities and their Heritage as fundamental witnesses of Identity and Memory of the Past.
- Recognize the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage.
- Understand the City as a whole as a privileged tourist product.
- To apprehend the different classifications of Urbanism and to identify them in their due context.
- Framing the Cities and their historical centers in their Time and Space.
SKILLS TO BE DEVELOPED
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Recognize that safeguarding the city as Memory and Historical Heritage is a fundamental factor of economic development.
- Understand Tourism as a potential promoter activity and care of the identity of the Cities.
- Understand the dangers that, however, the tourist activity can bring to the characterization of the City
- Apply the knowledge acquired in an interdisciplinary context and in future challenges.

The themes presented in the program respond to the objectives identified above, allowing the recognition of cities and heritage for identity and memory, recognizing the importance and need for safeguarding as heritage and tourism product.

The contents will be presented in dynamic expositive classes, where a strong participation of the students is sought, in order to promote the communication, reflection and discussion of ideas in the different themes. For this, exercises, case studies, illustrative videos and other multimedia materials will be presented. Technical / practical sessions (in the classroom and via e-learning platform), presentation sessions and discussion of works will be promoted.

Presentation of practical work: 30%.
Assiduity: 10%
Individual written tests: 2X 30%
Under Degree Regulations:
1. The effective presence of students in the classes will be registered and, if the number of absences per student exceeds 30% of the total number of contact sessions provided for each course unit, he/she will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation of the normal season.
2. In the written tests and in the defined evaluation elements it is necessary to obtain the minimum grade of 7,5 values.
3. If the student is absent or has a grade lower than 7,5 values in the tests or evaluation elements referred to in the previous number, he/she will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation of the normal season.
4. If the student is absent or has a grade lower than 7,5 values in the second written test (held on the same date as the final written test of the normal season), he/she may apply for evaluation at the appeal season.
Elements of the Final Evaluation:
Individual written test with 100% weighting.
The methodologies considered take into account the characteristics of the curricular unit. In spite of a theoretical nature, the use of case studies and other support materials aims to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the curricular unit, from an applied or practical point of view.
