Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

Descriptive summary of course unit
The curricular unit devotes attention to tourism and its importance in contributing to territorial development. Regional development have been gaining increasing attention. The economic growth and territorial development usually have a competitive and innovative importance for regions, reinforcing the central significance of these themes. Is important to debate the development and the contributions and impacts in territory and community. The curricular unit presents the discussion of concepts and themes of territorial development and tourism.

Objectives and expected learning outcomes
1. Know, discuss and understand the fundamental concepts of territorial development
2. Identify and discuss of issues related to regional development and development strategies
3. Understand the importance of regions and their role in economic and social development
4. Identify the role, potential and importance of tourism in regional development
5. Know the tourism development process and its models
6. Evaluate the development of tourism in Portugal
7. Recognize the potential of innovation and creativity for the development of regions in the field of tourism

Skills to be developed

It is intended that students develop the following competences:
1. Acquire theoretical knowledge that allows the mastery of fundamental concepts and themes of the activity and regional development
2. To stimulate the capacity of observation, analysis and critical sense in the application of technical concepts of the tourism area, as well as of situations and contexts of regional development
3. Aware about the importance of tourism, tourism experience and the responsibility of tourism professionals in these areas
4. Encourage personal and behavioral skills in terms of creativity, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, motivation and autonomy for success
5. Develop the interest for tourism research

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

The proposed program allows students to gain knowledge and develop the competencies foreseen in the objectives, as follows:
- Theme 1 responds to objective 1, presenting the fundamental concepts of the subject of territorial development.
- Theme 2 contributes to objective 2, in the identification and discussion of the problems associated with regional development.
- Theme 3 provide knowledge to achieve objectives 3,4,5 and 6 identifying the importance of regions and the potential of tourism for development. It also provides fundamental knowledge to know the process and development models, and evaluate the Portuguese case.
- Theme 4 devotes attention to dynamics and strategies, in order to achieve goal 7 of recognizing the potential of innovation and creativity for development in tourism.

Learning Methods

The contents will be presented in dynamic expositive classes, intending a strong participation of the students, in order to promote the communication, critical reflection and discussion of ideas in the different themes. For this, exercises, case studies, illustrative videos and other multimedia material will be presented. Technical / practical sessions (in the classroom and via e-learning platform), seminars, presentation sessions and discussion of works will be promoted.

Under Degree Regulations:

1. The actual presence of students in classes will registered, and if the number of absences for student exceed 30% of the total number of contact sessions scheduled for each course will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation of the regular season.
2. In written tests and evaluation elements referred to in sub-paragraphs b) to e) of paragraph 2 of Art. 39 is required to obtain a minimum score of 7.5 (seven point five) values.
3. If the student lacks or get a grade below 7.5 points in the tests or on the elements of assessment referred above, will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation of the regular season.
4. If the student lacks or get a grade below 7.5 points in the second written test (conducted on the same date of the written test end of the regular season) may be required registration for evaluation at the appeal time.

Under Regulation:
The practical or theoretical-practical work (s) referred in b) in the number 2 of the 30º article may also be considered, with a weighting corresponding to half of that considered in the context of continuous assessment, provided that the student communicates such intention to the teacher through the completion of a specific form to be made available by the teacher at the individual written test day.

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

The methodologies considered the characteristics of the curricular unit. In spite of a theoretical nature, the use of case studies and other support materials aims to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the curricular unit, from an applied or practical point of view.
