Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

DESCRIPTIVE SUMMARY OF CURRICULAR UNIT

Through this course unit students are expected to internalize the concept of organization, characterizing various organizational theories, such as the classical approaches, the school of human relations, systemic theory and contingency approaches. Subsequently, competencies that contribute to the effectiveness of a manager in an organization will be developed and analyzed. Taking into consideration the problems related to individual performance and organizational productivity, several motivational theories are analyzed, with great emphasis on communication processes in an organization, situations of conflict, the problem of occupational stress and the main orientations in the interpersonal relationship . The role of the group in organizations and the importance of teamwork are also an important area of knowledge to be developed, presenting an evolution of the scientific study on the phenomenon of leadership, highlighting the main points of the most significant investigations in this field. It is also intended to promote the study of ethics and corporate responsibility.

OBJECTIVES AND RESULTS OF LEARNING OUTCOMES

a) To provide an understanding of the reasons that led to the analysis of organizations on a scientific and rational basis
b) To understand the importance of the human element as a crucial explanatory basis for the internal functioning of organizations and to describe organizations as social systems
c) Understand the motivational process and know the main concepts of motivational theories
d) Provide the knowledge of the theoretical concepts to be able to analyze the functioning of the groups
e) Understand the importance of effective communication for individual development and organizational success
f) Provide an understanding of the leadership problem
g) Reflect on the importance of morality, ethics and deontology, taking into account the personal and professional dimensions
h) To know and understand the main perspectives related to ethics and moral development

a) To carry out a diagnosis of the organizational climate
b) Improve the motivational levels of the organizational collaborators
c) Improve communication processes
d) To intervene in the management of conflicts
e) Leading and motivating multidisciplinary teams
f) To develop the ability to listen effectively, negotiating, persuading and arguing
g) To develop an expression and communication compatible with the professional exercise, including in the negotiation processes and in the individual communications, in the groups and organizations
h) Reflect and act critically, understanding their position and function in the organization    
i) To master the basic vocabulary of Ethics and Deontology, namely with regard to the themes developed and the theories presented                                                                


Programme

1. Understanding organizations. The contribution of different approaches for the need to understand the importance of human behavior in organizational contexts.

2. Robert Katz`s triple competence: technical, interpersonal and strategic.

3. Human motivation: Motivational theories of content (Maslow; ERG de Alderfer; MccLelland, Herzberg) and process (Locke e Latham; Vroom).

4. Occupational Stress: Definitions and approaches of stress concept. Theoretical models of occupational stress. Antecedents and causes of occupational stress. Sources of stress; individual characteristics; distress and eustress; coping and savoring; stress consequences.

5. Communication`s importance within the organizational context. Verbal and non-verbal communication; Porter communicational attitudes. Morton Deutsch communicational models.

6. Conflict and main guidelines for interpersonal relationships. Different types of conflicts: The emotional detachment and the super ordinate goal technical.

7. The leadership process: leadership and chieftaincy concepts; Kurt Lewin and Blake e Mouton models. The Multiplex Model: his contribution for the conduction of work meeting.

8.Groups within organizations and the importance of teamwork.

9. Moral ethic and deontology: a clarification of the concepts. The different theoretical ethics.

10. Social responsibility of organizations.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

The study of the different schools aims to understand the importance of human behavior in organizational contexts. The focus on the development of interpersonal skills leads to topics related to motivation, communication processes, conflict management, teamwork as well as occupational stress. The main models of leadership of work teams are studied, giving great emphasis to the study of different ethical theories.

Learning Methods

It is intended to encourage students to participate actively in classes, developing their critical skills and their skills for effective personal study. Preference will be given to active methods, notably through the use of case studies, group work and role-playing. Wherever possible, the theoretical approach to the topics will make use of students¿ different personal and professional experiences, establishing a direct relationship with the labour market. With the aim of enhancing learning, audiovisual methods may also be used.

Continuous Assessment

Individual written test: 2 (35% + 35%)

Under the terms of the Regulation:

1. The actual presence of the students in the classes will be registered and, if the number of absences per student exceeds 30% of the total number of contact sessions provided for each course unit, it will automatically be transferred to the final evaluation of the normal season.

2. In the written tests and assessment elements referred to in points b) to e) of paragraph 2 of Article 39 it is necessary to obtain a minimum grade of 7.5 (seven point five) values.

3. If the student is absent or has a grade lower than 7.5 points in the tests or evaluation elements referred to in the previous number, he will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation of the normal season.

4. If the student fails to obtain a grade of less than 7.5 points in the second written test (held on the same date as the final written test of the normal time), he or she may apply for evaluation at the time of appeal.

Final exam: 100%

The practical projects referred to in sub-paragraph b) of paragraph 2 of Art. 39 can also be considered, with half of the percentage defined for the continuous assessment, as long as the teacher is informed about this decision by the student through a specific document handed by the teacher in the moment the written test takes place. 

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

This course aims to promote the development of interpersonal skills, so the use of case studies, role-playing and group work are the most appropriate for the development of these skills.
