Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

DESCRIPTIVE SUMMARY OF THE CURRICULAR UNIT
In this course, students acquire a set of fundamental tools for their training in management.
Whenever possible, appropriate software will be used to solve exercises, favoring the interpretation of outputs in the economic context.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND RESULTS
1. Formulate and solve linear programming problems and interpret, in the economic context, the solution obtained;
2. Assess the robustness of the solution;
3. Formulate and solve the dual problem;
4. Formulate and solve transport problems;
5. Formulate and solve allocation problems;
6. Formulate and solve network optimization problems;
7. Motivate the student for research and investigation.

COMPETENCES TO DEVELOP
Formulation and resolution of optimization problems, in the context of the company, through the use of appropriate techniques for each situation;
Interpretation and critical analysis of results.

Programme

0 - Introduction to Operational Research
I - Linear Programming: Simplex Method and variants
II - Transport problems
III - Assignment Problems
IV - Network Problems

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

In chapter I, objectives 1, 2 and 3 will be achieved.
In chapters II, III and IV, objectives 4, 5, and 6, respectively, will be achieved.
Objective 7 will be present in all chapters.

Learning Methods

The classes are theoretical-practical, with exposure of the theoretical concepts on blackboard and / or projection of slides. The consolidation of concepts will be based on the resolution of practical exercises, whenever possible, using appropriate software.

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Conclusion Date
Attendance (estimated)  Lessons  45
 Teste/Exame  3
 Participação Presencial  18
 Study  94
  Total: 160

Continuous Assessment

1st test: 40% weight *
2nd test: 40% weight *
Work (submitted through the E-Learning platform): Weight of 20%

* Individual written tests without consultation.

According to the regulation of the Degree:

a) The effective presence of students in classes will be subject to registration and, if the number of absences per student exceeds 30% of the total number of contact sessions foreseen for each course unit, it will be automatically transferred to the final assessment of the normal season;

b) In the written tests and in the defined evaluation elements, it is necessary to obtain a minimum score of 7.5 values;

c) If the student misses or obtains a rating lower than 7.5 values ¿¿in the tests or in the evaluation elements referred to in the previous number, he will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation of the normal season;

d) If the student misses or obtains a score lower than 7.5 in the second written test (carried out on the same date as the final written test in the normal season), he / she may require registration for evaluation in the appeal period;

e) The academic works foreseen in the evaluation will have to be submitted in the Turnitin database, available on ISAG's E-Learning platform, with a similarity rate of up to 30% being acceptable.

Final Exam

Final Exam: 100%

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

Cognitive skills are developed through exposure and discussion of problems. The skills of sharing and teamwork are developed in group work / exercises solved in classes. Communication skills are acquired throughout the UC.
