Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

Descriptive summary of the course
The curricular unit is based on structuring basic principles in the field of tourism, seeking to develop theoretical, conceptual and practical knowledge fundamental to the understanding of tourism as a social and economic activity based on a systemic model.
Therefore, the curricular unit integrates a multiplicity of fundamental aspects for the understanding of tourism, privileging the analysis, reflection and discussion of tourism, its evolution, organization, operation, supply and demand and trends.

Objectives and expected learning outcomes
1. Know, discuss and understand the fundamental concepts of tourism
2. Describe the evolution of tourism
3. Identify the different classifications of tourism
4. Recognize the systemic perspective of tourism
5. Know the national and international organizations in the tourism sector, their duties and areas of expertise
6. Identify and characterize the different components of tourism demand and supply
7. Identify and discuss trends in tourism.

Skills to develop

It is intended that students develop the following skills:
1. Acquire theoretical knowledge that allows the mastery of fundamental concepts and themes of the activity
2. Stimulate the capacity for observation, analysis and critical sense in the application of technical concepts in the field of tourism, as well as situations and contexts of the activity
3. Sensitize students to the importance of tourism, tourism experience / experience and the responsibility of tourism professionals in these fields
4. Foster personal and behavioral skills in terms of creativity, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, motivation and autonomy for success
5. Developing a taste for research in tourism

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

The proposed program allows students to gain the knowledge and develop the skills provided for in the objectives, insofar as:
- Theme 1 responds to objective 1, as it presents the fundamental concepts of tourism;
- Theme 2 is in line with that proposed in Objective 2, which aims to understand the evolution of tourism;
- Theme 3 allows access to Objective 3, in order to get to know the organizations in the tourism sector, as well as attributions and areas of expertise;
- Theme 4 will present the contents that make it possible to respond to objectives 4 and 5, which consists of the recognition of the systemic perspective of tourism, as well as the identification and characterization of tourism demand and supply;
- Theme 5 will meet objective 7, which aims to identify and discuss trends in the tourism sector.

Learning Methods

The contents will be presented in dynamic expository classes, where a strong participation of students is intended, in order to promote communication, reflection and discussion of ideas on different themes. For this, exercises, case studies, illustrative videos and other multimedia support material will be presented. Technical / practical sessions (in class and via e-learning platform), presentation and discussion sessions will be promoted.

Continuous Assessment

Continuous evaluation:
2 Written tests 2 x 35%
1 individual e-learning work 30%


Under the terms of the course's Regulation:

a) The students' attendance in classes will be recorded and, if the number of absences per student exceeds 30% of the total number of lessons scheduled for each course unit, the student will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation (regular season).
b) In the written tests and other assessment elements mentioned, it is necessary to obtain a minimum grade of 7.5 (seven point five) points.
c) If the student misses a test or receives a grade lower than 7.5 points in the tests or in another assessment element mentioned in the previous number, the student will be automatically transferred to the final evaluation (regular season).
d) If the student misses or obtains less than 7.5 in the second written test, held in the same date of the final exam in the regular season, they may apply for further evaluation in the Appeal season
e) All the written assessments included in the evaluation (reports, case studies, etc.) must be submitted through the Turnitin data base, available on the eLearning Platform, a similarity rate lower than 30% is accepted.

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

The methodologies considered take into account the characteristics of the course. Despite a theoretical character, the use of case studies and other support materials, aim to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the course, from an applied or practical point of view.
